How Nom Nom Got Started?
Nom Nom, formally known as Nom Nom Now, was thought of in 2014 by a group of animal lovers who began by experimenting with cooking and delivering fresh dog food to friends and family. Cooking fresh food was important because their own dog Harlee developed health issues related to a compromised immune system, and was being fed a fresh food diet. As Harlee’s health improved, and more people seemed interested, they hired expert nutritionist Dr. Justin Shmalberg to develop and formulate the healthy recipes.
The recipes are made with human grade, whole food ingredients, with no artificial preservatives or fillers and portioned specifically for your dogs age, weight, activity level, breed, as well as any known health issues. The meals are are cooked weekly, in small batches, and exceed the AAFCO standards for dog food formulation for all life stages.
Nom Nom’s products are made in commercial kitchens in San Francisco and Nashville that’s 100% owned and operated them. This is important because other dog food companies usually use a shared kitchen space and meaning food standards may not be upheld.
Today Nom Nom is a well known, subscription service that delivers fresh, human-grade, customized home-cooked meals to your pets to ensure they live happy, healthy, and long lives.
How We Tested?
You may have come across many Nom Nom dog food reviews in your search and unfortunately anyone can gather information from other reviews and make their own. Or maybe the review is skewed because they received the product for free in exchange for a more influential outcome.
Just to put your mind at ease, this review isn’t sponsored or supported by Nom Nom in any way, shape or form.
We went through the ordering process mentioned in this review and paid with our own money. We also did not inform Nom Nom that we would be reviewing their food at any point.
Since our review of Nom Nom is completely independent, we did not feel pressured to please them in any way. Our goal is to provide you with a sense of what the actual consumer experience is like from beginning to end.
We provide real reviews because you deserve real tried and true opinions, along with pros and cons that can help you make a well-informed decision about whether the product in question is something your own dog will enjoy or benefit from, and whether you will benefit in any way.
So…here’s what we did: We ordered dog food from Nom Nom, making sure to test all the recipes that they offer to date. A real dog ate the food and provided us with immediate, trustworthy feedback.
Why You Should Trust Our Review of Nom Nom?
We actually tried this food on one of our dogs. We did not copy or sum up information from other pet parents’ experiences, and we did not re-post Nom Nom’s claims. We also wanted to see and smell the food for ourselves as well as monitor how our dog responds to this food vs. what he normally eats.
Because my dog is constantly trying different foods and transitions quickly, without issues, he was the dog we used for this review. His name is Sampson and he is a 6 year old shepherd/pit bull mix who eats anything and everything, but mostly eats kibble. Sampson doesn’t have any health concerns, conditions, or special needs but could stand to lose 5 to 10 pounds.
After placing an order with Nom Nom and receiving it, Sampson spent the next 8 days eating only Nom Nom dog food.
During the trial period, we watched for changes in Sampson’s health and behavior. Since he eats kibble most of the time we monitored his poop schedule, weight and over all excitement for meal time.
Who This Review is For?
With so many dog food reviews out there for average pet owners, we wanted to go further. Average pet owners just want a little push to decide if pet food is safe, palatable, and nutritious enough for the average dog to eat.
This review is different. We wrote it with extra-engaged pet parents in mind. The people, who like us, only want the very best for their furry family members. People who want convenience and quality and maybe willing to spend a few extra bucks doing so.
We began by going to Nom Nom’s website and seeing what they have to offer. Not only do they have dog food, treats and cat food but now also offer supplements.
The reviews all seem very positive and the pictures of the food actually looked some what appetizing. The site also offers an area for not only reviews but personal stories about how Nom Nom food helped their pets.
With great marketing and so many stories it’s hard not to be convinced it’s good food but that is not enough for us.
We went on to create a profile for Sampson, and provided his current weight, target weight, age and then chose the recipes we wanted. The cost ultimately depends on the size of your dog and for every pound of pup you enter, the price will go up.
Nom Nom offers a variety pack for dogs box, which allows potential customers to receive four meals for only $15 per pack. You can also choose to order half meal options which will save you 43% off your dogs plan overall.
We chose the variety packs and then paid for the order. We were notified via email when the order is processed, shipped and also provided with a tracking number.
After trying the samples you will receive shipments every two weeks, with 28 individual packets of food, which arrive fresh, and packed in dry ice to keep it cool.
Nom Nom does have other automatic delivery options: bi-weekly, and monthly deliveries depending on how much food your dog receives.
Managing your account with Nom Nom is easy and you are able to log in to pause your subscription up to two weeks in advance or the next two deliveries.
My Nom Nom order arrived less than week after I set up my dog’s profile. It was packed in a, insulated, recyclable box with dry ice that kept the food cold during transport. I purchased two variety packs of food for dogs, which included all four recipe flavors.
The box included a handy instruction booklet that included nutritional information and suggestions on transitioning your dogs to the Nom Nom food, as well as a detailed recipe ingredients brochure.
The box also contained four small samples of the beef and chicken jerky treats Nom Nom offers.
The food comes neatly packaged in recyclable materials and wrapped in plastic straps. Each packet is clearly labeled with the recipe and ingredients in bold letters. It is easy to see the mentioned ingredients through the packaging on the other side. The instructions recommend placing a few packages into the refrigerator to thaw and putting the rest into the freezer.
What Does Sampson Think About Nom Nom?
I started my dog Sampson on the Nom Nom Beef recipe and rotated flavors for the first four days. He did not seem to like one flavor more than the other and inhaled each one as soon as the bowl was put down in front of him. I will mention again, he is not picky at all, but I can tell when a food really excites him.
Each package was portioned for one meal. The plastic packaging was a little bit difficult to open and best done with scissors. Once opened, the food has a fresh “human” food smell and the chunks of meat and vegetables are clearly identifiable.
As soon as I opened the packaging he was right behind me waiting for his bowl to hit the floor
During the eight day trial of Nom Nom, Sampson’s weight did not change much and he looked just as round as before he started. He did not have any adverse reactions to the food and seemed to recognize Nom Nom’s packaging when taken out of the freezer, thinking it was time to eat.
I did notice a change in Sampson’s poop and that is there was much less of it. He did seem to go less often as well which is a huge plus for Nom Nom Dog food.

How Much Does Nom Nom Dog Food Cost?
The cost depends on your dog’s age, weight, and activity level. For a 50 to 80 pound dog you can expect to pay $224.00 to $ 280.00 per month. Nom Nom does provide discounts for less frequent deliveries and offer a multi-pet discount.
The best way to find out how much Nom Nom might cost you is to set up a profile for your dog and they will provide you with different meal plans and price options. You do not have to complete the order at the end.
Nom Nom’s Returns & Warranty
Of course Nom Nom is not able to accept returns since their fresh meals are perishable. But if you don’t see the difference the food can make after 30 days of your dog eating Nom Nom, they will give you a full refund of your first 30 days of food.
The nice thing is you can donate any uneaten Nom Nom food to your local shelter.
Is Nom Nom A Good Choice?
Yes. Their recipes are made with USDA Grade A ingredients that are approved for human consumption and each ingredient is gently cooked separately to ensure it maintains its optimal nutrient capacity. They also have several meal options for dogs of all shapes and sizes, convenient packaging, flexible delivery schedule, easy-to-use website and variety packs as well as half meals available.
If you are hesitant because it can be a bit pricey, Nom Nom offers half food plans so your dog can still get a nutritious meal.
Nom Nom is the next best thing to giving your dog a home cooked meal and much healthier than most kibbles on the market.
